School: Varies each session

Year-long district Pre-K Learning Community will provide an opportunity for teachers to collaborate and share best practices throughout District 1. Teachers will meet for Labsites four times in the year with a different participant acting as Labsite Lead each time to demonstrate choice and group work in the Pre-K classroom. There will also be monthly Zoom Sessions during the Monday PL time for teachers to share a problem of practice and receive feedback from one another.

Math Collaborative

Lead Teacher:  Laura Schaefer

School:  PS/MS 140 Nathan Straus

This year-long district math collaborative will focus on deepening content knowledge, developing inquiry based tasks, and analyzing and using student work to increase student-to-student engagement and discussion.

The collaborative will meet in October at the Labsite Lead’s school. November, January and March’s sessions will be held in participants’ classrooms. The hosting participants will receive support in lesson planning, task development and group feedback. The final session, to be held in May, will either be an additional classroom visit or creating/revising a year-long math curriculum map based on the experiences gained in the math collaborative (will be determined by participants’ needs).

** This will be a full day labsite. **

  • School:  PS 15 The Roberto Clemente School

We will study pedagogy and practices in STEAM, both in the Makerspace and as part of classroom instruction. Students will solve real-world problems by improving every-day items using a variety of high-tech and low-tech approaches. As we explore the engineering design process, we will focus on effective methods for providing students access to new learning to maximize transfer of knowledge and skills in new situations.  We will facilitate the process of learning with an emphasis on student choice and ownership of their learning.

Project Based Learning

Lead Teachers: Jia Lee and Jessica Smith

School: PS 364 The Earth School

The Project Based Learning Labsite will welcome teachers to a 4/5 ICT bridge classroom during their "Justice For All?” instructional periods. They be studying the origins of the U.S. through three different perspectives. The focus at this age is to engage in an inquiry based study that involves research (different sources), analyzing information and conveying new learning through multiple mediums. Participants will have a chance to observe the inquiry and project based process from beginning, middle and end.
Jia (special education teacher) and Jessica (general education teacher) have been co-teaching together since 2011 at the Earth School. Their partnership song is "Ain't No Mountain High Enough".

Student Led Literacy

Lead Teacher: Christina Brown

School: PS 140 Nathan Straus

The Student Led Literacy Labsite will focus on the systems and structures established to promote a high level of student independence in literacy. Students will engage in deep thinking during discussions, creating rubrics and checklists to assess their own learning, and making purposeful decisions to achieve their self-identified goals. Time will be spent during the debrief discussing the routines and rituals to support student independence, the use of independent reading time, and the strategic teacher moves planned to build student agency.
** There will be time to apply the learning to grade specific work.
